The designer

Brigitte Simmons.

She was always fascinated by how things are made.

At 10, she got her little sister to lie down on paper and drew around her. From this sketch emerged a makeshift pattern, and with sewing skills taught by her mother, Brigitte made her first dress. This first, special piece was made even more so as it became her sister’s favourite dress, worn until it fell apart. Her love of construction and keen eye for styling led her from small town to silver screen.

One of the delights of working in film is the range of styles one is exposed to – period movies, fantasy, contemporary dramas – allowing Brigitte to develop a diverse and robust understanding of fashion. Each genre applies different techniques to Wardrobe, using both traditional and modern tailoring. This has given Brigitte the flexibility to pick and choose techniques based on what looks and works best.

Between sets, Brigitte worked alongside a variety of industry experts, including a bespoke Tailor on Saville Row, a Bridal Couture Designer in Auckland, and a well-known Australian womenswear brand. Her experience culminated in a deep understanding of fit - what the issues are, how different cuts and fabrics work, and what looks good on which shapes.

“Traditional tailoring isn't necessarily better than modern tailoring; new materials and technologies can elevate the traditional.”
